And the Answer Is....

The answer to the contest is that all of the photos were taken of Amish homes/farms, which means Deb from What's in My Attic is the official winner because she was the first to guess it correctly, though Carolien and Madge also guessed correctly, and "Sprouting Acorn" was on the right track. Deb, if you will please email me at [salomafurlong(at)gmail(dot)com] with your mailing address, I will be happy to send you the mini Cape. Keep your eye out for more giveaways, for David will offer more designs in the future.

I actually want to make a point with these photos, which Sharon Marie picked up on when she mentioned that she was starting to think in stereotypes. This was an exercise to demonstrate how we cannot generalize about Amish farms any more than we can about Amish carpenters and their work. Many people have images of well-kept Amish farms. While most of them are indeed well-kept, they are by no means all. I don’t think the Amish should be lumped together whether it’s in an unfavorable light or a favorable one. Some Amish individuals I know have gotten used to being catered to — whether they are allowed to go to the front of the line in a restaurant, being driven around at no cost to them, or being exempt from laws the rest of us must abide by. To favor a group of people because of their religion or ethnicity is as prejudiced as its opposite. The Amish (or any other group, for that matter) should not be allowed to hide behind their religion any more than we should lose respect and trust for all Amish because of one person's misdeeds, as in the case of Monroe Beachy

  1. How true! I went by the beautiful Amish farms near us when I lived in Wisconsin. And they wouldn't all look the same. Good lesson, Saloma! :)

  2. Oh, Saloma, I'm so sorry to have to throw a wrench into your giveaway...but I don't really participate in these for a bunch of reasons. I shouldn't have commented, or should have been clearer about my comment being just for the fun of it...not for entering to win! The Cape Cod is truly a lovely little replica, and if I DID participate, I would love owning it. It is just the kind of thing I am drawn to; I did minatures for a long while until my eyes couldn't take it any more! So, I must pass on this wonderful offer, so that you can send the beautiful little home to it's rightful recipient! Thanks again...and congrats to the real winner!

  3. You are so correct about stereotypes and the Amish. It is so easy to believe that all their homes, farms, etc. are tidy. That you would never see a car in the driveway. The list goes on and on. I seriously thought you might have been going down that direction with the contest, but I too fell into believing the whole stereotype. They are no different than any other part of society. We all have our faults, difference, etc... they are no exception. Thanks for the reminder.
