About Me

My Photo
[If you use this photo, please credit Kerstin Martin] I was born and raised in an Amish community in Ohio. Driven by my desire for freedom and more formal education, I broke away from my community –– not once, but twice. I graduated from Smith College in May 2007 with a major in German Studies and a minor in Philosophy. My education has included research on the Amish with Dr. Donald Kraybill and a semester abroad in Germany, where I studied at the University of Hamburg. During my thirty-year inner struggle of coming to terms with my Amish past, I have gleaned a better understanding of myself and my heritage. It is this perspective that I bring to my reflections about Amish.

A Fond Farewell to Stephen Scott

I'd like to send my condolences to the family members, friends, and colleagues of Stephen Scott, who died last week. You can click here for his obituary.

I got to know Stephen Scott when I was doing my internship at the Young Center. I could usually count on him when I needed help with anything, including solving technology glitches. He remarked on that one day... how it's ironic that a Plain person ends up becoming a technology geek. He was a member of the Old Order River Brethern and was therefore close to the subjects he wrote about the Amish, like the book "Why Do They Dress that Way?"

Stephen and I had several philosophical discussions about Plain cultures while I was working there. In his own quiet way, he helped me see things from a different point of view at times. And he was a calm listener, which made it easy to discuss such things.

Stephen Scott will be missed by many. My heart goes out to his family and colleagues at the Young Center. May he rest in peace.

I hadn't heard this- thank you for posting it. It was a pleasure to have met him, and he will surely be missed by many. His contributions to the Anabaptist world were valuable, and always interesting. ~Monica (who is trying to get her blog back up and running and restore some order to her life)
