Life in Fast Forward

You know what it's like when it feels like someone has just set your whole life into fast forward? You feel like you want there to be 25 hours in each day, so that you can get caught up? You feel tired and sleep-deprived, and therefore not as productive as you want to be?

If you don't know what this is like, I'll be happy to describe it in more detail... when my life slows down.

If you do know what this is like, what are some of your coping skills? How do you carve out time for your own well-being? What do you do to rejuvenate? And when you have to let go of something (because you simply cannot do it all), what do you let go of?

I would love to know how you deal with life when you find you have too much to do.

For now I'll share a photo of a serene moment in my life. This was taken on a summer afternoon, when David and I awoke from a nap in a B&B in Trub, Switzerland. We heard bells as we awoke, and I asked David what he thought those were. We got up and opened the window, and there were sheep grazing outside. They were wearing little bells around their necks.

  1. What a gorgeous restful place! Use the picture has a mental mini-vacation--look at it, try to recall how rested you felt when you looked out the window.

I frequently feel like there are too few hours and too many tasks in my day. Eating more protein and less high-carb foods, drinking lots of water and getting more exercise has helped me generate more energy. All of that helps me cope with too much to do.

Looking at what truly needs to be in my day and what is dreck also helps. Singing renews me-"fills the well". Learning to say no has helped stop the drain on my energy. I don't have to do all things for all people anymore.

  2. What a relaxing story about the sheep. I'm trying to imagine Jim's reaction if I told him I wanted to tie bells around the necks of our sheep.

Life overwhelms me quite often. I make lists. Hopefully you can prioritize yours and accomplish everything you have to when it is needed! Good luck!

  3. I definitely identify with there not being enough hours in the day soemtimes! I agree with Nancy - deciding not to be all things to all people helps, likewise eating properly and exercising. I think getting enough sleep is also key - I feel ever so much better and energetic when I do. Another thing that has helped me a lot is to simply (?!) take each thing as it comes - each week, day, or even hour. Put 1 foot in front of the other. Constantly thinking about what comes next, or what I could have or should have done is wasted energy. We really only have the HERE and NOW, so only concentrating on that works wonders. NOT easy to do, but it gets easier with practice. Good luck, Saloma - just know that "This too shall pass..." And in the meantime - enjoy every single minute of the ride!

  4. Trying to do too much with the candle burning at both ends can be tough. So i dont think that its posible to control stress, and the best that one can do is to manage it. I like to write my needed and important things today on a list, then the less important ones will get done later on. Richard

  6. I am seldom busy but with our recent move I was busier than I like and it makes me a nervous wreck. My way of unwinding is to make my surroundings as quiet as I can and just be still and reflect on God. or if I am just needing a little peace, I will listen to hymns and pull out the crochet, beading or cross stitch. Of course laughing at the cat's antics is always fun!

  7. Earlier this past fall, I found myself wound right up. It's not that I was so busy but there were so many things demanding my brain power, that when nighttime came, I simply sat and read or crocheted. I don't even crochet well, but it was sort of mindless and creative (no pattern) and it just worked. My eyes were too tired for the computer screen. I neglected my blog (the first thing to go) and my "social networking" soon followed! I made time for breakfast and made sure I drank plenty of water. Sadly I also ate plenty of chocolate and now I'm paying fr it on the scale :-(

Erika enjoyed her crocheted hat :-) The mittens are not finished!
