I'm now "Linked In"

As a writer, I get a lot of people telling me I "should" be on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and the myriad of other social media options. I don't mind saying this publicly, but I hate Facebook with a passion -- there are so many reasons not to like it. A while ago, I finally succumbed (sort of) to the shoulds and created a Facebook profile. But I delete all my emails from Facebook, and I spend absolutely no time on my page. Here is a link to my Facebook page. I basically link to my blog and website.

I attended a workshop on LinkedIn this morning, and then I spent most of the day setting that up. I am looking for a day job, so I'm hoping this will be helpful. Here is my LinkedIn Page.

Though I rarely go there, I do have a Twitter account. Here is a link to my Twitter Page.

Do you use social media? If so, which is your favorite and your least favorite? Do you enjoy it, or do you find it to be just too much?

Megan tells the story of this little girl pulling her own hair and screaming because it hurt, not realizing the pain came from her pulling her own hair. What a metaphor for the way I feel about social media. And yet I spent my birthday setting up yet another time sync and source of creating my own pain. Silly me.

  1. Happy birthday! Hope your new year ahead will be blessed and spent in a for you healthy and social(media) way.

  2. If it were not for the fact that facebook is pretty much my only contact with people, I would not have facebook. Jack and I are pretty much alone with only 1 or 2 visitors at most a year so it is a nice way to have someone to talk to! We do go to church when we are well enough but I like someone to say hello to during the day.

  3. Happy Birthday!I have Twitter and Facebook, and don't want any more...there's only so much time available to spend on social media. Don't like Facebook all that much, and Twitter a lot better. But it's my blog that I love the best! I suppose they all have their pros and cons.

  4. At my daughter's urging, I joined Facebook. It is a good way to stay in touch with her doings and to get acquainted with my now-grown granddaughter. Since then I also check in with several friends there- they post some fantastic local landscapes. I never get tired of Alaska's scenery.

  7. You can turn off e-mail notifications from facebook completely. I did because I was getting sick of the constant e-mails...

  8. I have a Facebook account, but other than "sharing" cute photos, I do very little on it, but I do keep track of friends and what THEY are doing.

  9. Eureka! I've discovered this account still works. Need I say more about my level of intelligence in regards to anything electronic. I'm still a lover of pen and paper, telephones, letters transported via the United States Postal Service, hard cover books, and face to face conversations. What a dinosaur I am! Don't care.
There's something appealing about my fingers caressing a page as I turn to the next. And the face and voice inflections and true to life smiles, tears, pouts, and expressions of every sort. It's what makes life tangible and real.
But why try to fight progress or scorn it? The fact is, you just can't sit with and look at everyone no matter how much you wish you could. Then again, there are those you don't want to see and for this the electronic age is quite agreeable.

  10. Our group uses twitter and facebook. The website is our baby but social networks are great for promoting and outreach. I find more people are open to sharing and seeking support through twitter/fb , especially those who need to stay anonymous. Seems like many Amish young people have some kind of online presence. Love your blog, look forward to retweeting you! :-) - thaddeus @lgbtiamish

  11. Like you, I do not like Facebook, and have heard too many of the problems associated with it to try it.

  12. I "do" Facebook & mostly enjoy it. However, I limit whatever personal info I share there, knowing that it really is not a private site. I mostly enjoy keeping in touch with friends & family who live far away - and seeing pictures of them all that I would otherwise never see. I think the enjoyment there is directly related to how much the others you're in touch with use it. I do have some distant friends who NEVER put anything on there & I find that disappointing, because why even bother?

It is most important to me to stay in touch with the "real" world, but technology is here to stay, so I also think it's important to be somewhat knowledgeable there. The younger generations know nothing but, so it does seem to be the best way to reach them. I try to remember that these are all tools to be used to our advantage - NOT to allow them to control our lives...

  13. I missed your birthday :-( I almost missed my own! I do like Facebook because I am able to keep up with my children and old classmates and share pictures. I also keep track of Katie Troyer, who commented above, and her lovely pictures more easily! My Facebook is pretty private...people can search for me but they don't see much more than my profile, cover picture and where I was born. I have a page for our summer business and one for our winter business. I've never had any problems with Facebook but I also took the time to go through the privacy settings and customized for our family. I don't know that much about Linkedin but I did check it out a while back and it appears that many professionals use it. I have a Twitter account but never use it and got it only because a friend whose blog I enjoy reading had one. Neither of us use it! My 13 year old granddaughter is not allowed on Facebook but she is allowed on Instagram so I do have an account there so we can share pictures and comments.
